It is very important that you learn your local state requirements concerning the types and amounts of insurance coverage your policy should carry before even purchasing it. For additional information and specific questions, please contact the Illinois Division of Insurance's Consumer Assistance at 866-445-5364.
Illinois auto insurance regulations oblige all car owners to carry at least minimum amounts of coverage with their policies:
Liability:
This type of coverage pays for the damage delivered to property or injuries inflicted to persons involved in an accident with your vehicle. Bodily injury coverage should be at least $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident, while property damage minimum is $15,000 per accident.
Uninsured Motorist:
This type of coverage takes force in hit-and-run accidents, or in cases when the other driver has not auto insurance and is at fault. The minimums are the same as with normal bodily injury coverage - $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident.
There are other types of auto insurance coverage in Illinois that can be purchased optionally, However, we recommend checking with your lender or car dealer in case you have used an auto loan to finance the purchase of your vehicle, in order to see if they have any additional requirements concerning types and amounts of insurance to be included with your insurance policy.
Most insurance experts recommend purchasing more coverage than your state requires. In many cases the minimum amounts of coverage won't be enough to cover a serious accident. Learn the repair and medical costs in your area and adjust your coverage levels to make sure you are fully covered and won't have to pay anything out of pocket.
